In the course of Free Comic Book Day, stores will give away millions of comic books, ranging in subject matter from high-flying super-hero adventure to intense slice-of-life to crime noir to kid-friendly humor and more.

Unlike video stores, bookstores, and movie theaters, comic book stores are usually independently owned and operated, with no national chains dominating the market. As a result, each store is as individual as its owner, a celebration of the incredible diversity in the comic book field. Those who think comic books are “just for kids” or “old-fashioned” will be pleasantly surprised by the broad range of reading material available at their local comic book store.

Christian Slade, A former Disney animator, will be signing from Noon until 2pm. Christian’s all-ages graphic novel, Korgi, has received notable praise for its exceptional artwork. It  is a woodland fantasy tale about a young girl Ivy, and her korgi, Sprout. Korgi Book 2 will be out in August 2008. Christian lives in Orlando, Florida with his wife Ann and their two welsh corgis Penny and Leo.

Jeffrey Brown, a Chicago- based comics creator, will sign from 2pm until 4pm. His works include Clumsy, Unlikely, AEIOU, Be A Man, Bighead, I Am Going To Be Small, Minisulk, and Every Girl is the End of the World For Me. He’s also appeared in a host of antholgies from McSweeney’s to the Drawn & Quarterly Showcase, and has been featured on NPR’s ‘This American Life.’

Regular updates, information about comic books, and lists of participating publishers (and their comics) are all online at http://www.FreeComicBookDay.com.

These EXCLUSIVE signings kick off Saturday, May 3 at NOON and run until 4 PM at Chicago Comics,3244 North Clark St. Free Comic Book Day begins at 11 am and runs until 9pm!
