Part of the Booklyn Chapbook series, Wheatley's rich watercolors document three years of observing the Buffalo organization Literacy Volunteers. I almost want to posit that comics watercolor as a medium for comics innately lends the structure a entrancing fluidity - in Wheatley's work slipping from lessons and conversations to more formal interviews. The effect is almost the same as a seamless documentary film as partial but complex biographies emerge of the students, tutors and families that are part of the program. -EF
