Problematic Sketchbook Drawings 2004 2012
by Jim Woodring
Published by Fantagraphics Books
364p, b&w, hardcover, 5"x8"
An interesting peek into Jim Woodring's sketchbooks that suffers terribly from piss-poor book design. From the ill-considered "slap an ugly sticker on it" cover to the greyed-out pages printed larger than original size to the mysteriously high cover price, Fantagraphics does a good job here of making me forget I'm totally psyched about getting a look at Woodring's process. Fascinating stuff like this has trouble working when it's not lovingly presented - if I'm looking at fragments I want something like Gary Panter's modest Satiroplastic sketchbook or Yam Books' new Lollygag anthology. Conclusion: well-titled. -EF
