A biographical account (with the footnote of some creative engineering) of Dessaint's parents Joanie and Vaughn, meeting, and the ensuing emotional tug-of-war they put each other through. Dessaint's writing is fluid and although it follows Vaughn's perspective a little closer throughout the narrative, there's a clear empathy for everyone concerned. It's a touching and interesting read, a truly thoughtful portrait of people not-quite-in-love in early 60s L.A.
