Harkham's work is like the comics equivalant of a Cassavettes film: composed exquisitely, paced cunningly and embracing a humor that is not-kind-at-all, Harkham's world of characters are complicated and essentially self-serving yet tethered to each other. Cinematic and unrepentant, I think this is much of his stuff from the Kramers anthologies: Poor Sailor, Somersaulting, Lubavech, Napoleon, salty comics about popular cartoonists. -E
