Jessica Campbell grew up in a family that was cultishly devoted to its Evangelical/Pentecostal/charismatic church. In JC’s Way, Jessica depicts moments in her life related to the church between 1992 and 2003. The church seems progressive, in that it has a rock band and dancing during services, but its hierarchies are patriarchal and ridiculously sexist.
JC’s Way feels like a late night conversation, in which the whole story isn’t told, and maybe you feel a little too embarrassed to pry about someone’s childhood. Jessica shows the faults in her old church and its followers without any commentary, leaving you fairly unsure whether you should laugh or feel uncomfortable by the situation.
