Offsite: Chicago Zine Fest 2017!

Quimby’s is proud to be a co-sponsor of the Chicago Zine Fest, a celebration of small press and independent publishers, with free workshops, events, and an annual festival. The next CZF will be held May 5th-6th, 2017.

Fri, May 5th at Co-Prosperity Sphere (3219 S Morgan St in Bridgeport) – NOT AT QUIMBY’S
6:30pm: “Tools of Survival: Using Zines for Self-Care Panel” moderated by School of Life Design co-founder Kelly Cree. With JC, Rinko Endo, and Kevin Budnik. Panel sponsored by The University of Chicago Library.
8pm: Exhibitor Readings, featuring zinesters & comics artists Natasha HernandezBianca XuniseAus & LaurenEryca SenderSage CoffeyJavier Suarez + Cameron Del RosarioFiona Avocado, and Jim Joyce.

Sat, May 6th at Plumbers Union Hall (1340 W Washington Blvd) – NOT AT QUIMBY’S
11am-6pm: Zine Exhibition – Quimby’s will have a table, yes! Here’s the list of other exhibitors, sponsors, and guests!
noon-1pm “Ever Evolving Bastion of Freakdom: A Quimby’s Panel.” Chicago Zine Fest offers the community a way to engage and learn through a selection of workshops held during the expo. CZF is pleased to celebrate the 25th Anniversary of Chicago’s Quimby’s bookstore with the panel “Ever Evolving Bastion of Freakdom: A Retrospective of Quimby’s” featuring a discussion (moderated by CZF co-organizer Alex Nall) with store founder Steven Svymbersky (and owner of Quimby’s Bookstore NYC), Quimby’s Bookstore Chicago store manager and zinester Liz Mason, with special guests, Neil Brideau (former employee and founder of Radiator Comics) and artist/photographer/Quimby’s regular customer Oscar Arriola. Come for a rousing discussion of how Quimby’s Bookstore got started, how it has evolved over the years, and how each panelist played a vital role in where it is today! April 29th 6:30 – 8pm, Panel: Permission Not Granted: Women of Color and the Politics of Zines

A discussion sponsored by the University of Chicago Library with Leila Abdelrazaq, Sarah Gonzalez, and Monika Harris. Moderated by Monica Trinidad.

April 29th 8 – 9:30pm, Exhibitor Reading: Readings by Andi Santagata (Sorry Mom Comix), JC (Tributaries), Jonas (Cheer the Eff Up), Marnie Galloway (In the Sounds and Seas), Rachel & Sari (Hoax), Taryn Hipp (Lady Teeth), Tanuja Jagernauth (Brown & Proud Press Collective), and Vicky Lim (Abstract Door).

All events during CZF weekend are free, open to the public, and wheelchair accessible. The Youth Reading will be held as a workshop on Saturday, April 30 at Plumbers Hall.

CZF 2016 WORKSHOPS

Peruse our workshop offerings for this year’s zine fest below. We’re excited as always to offer a variety of programming for you and your zine-loving friends!

  • Revolutionary Mothering: from zines to anthologies. Join Mai’a Williams and China Martens, two editors of Revolutionary Mothering: Love on the Front lines – to talk about creating in difficult environments, zines and book anthologies, life, art and revolution. Mama centric, but open to all.
  • Drawing Out the Issues: Comics Journalism. Using our recent series for Truthout, Growing Season, as a basis for discussion—as well as our upcoming book Threadbare: Clothes, Sex, and Trafficking—the Ladydrawers Comics Collective will informally talk participants through the basics of longform, collective, comics journalism investigations.
  • Lumpen Live Taping & Radio Transmission. Live radio segment broadcasting directly from CZF 2016!
  • Youth Reading. Join the youngest members of the zine community while they show us all up with their zine skills.
  • Cute Animal Drawing Workshop. Fun ways to draw cute animals for kids ages 6 to 12. Learn basic skills to create infinite cute animals.
  • Busy Beaver Button Co. Custom button making workshop!

Chicago Zine Fest 2015 Registration Starts Sun, Feb 22nd

CZF15boxRegistration for the 2015 Chicago Zine Fest opens this Sunday, February 22 at 12pm (Central Time)! Table space is first come, first served, and it sells out quickly. Click here for more info.

CZF will be on May 8 + 9, 2015 at a few places around Chicago including tabling at Plumbers Union Hall on the Near West Side. Exhibition day is Saturday from 11am – 6pm. More info on the weekend’s events will be announced soon!

Chicago Zine Fest Announces 2015 Dates, Exhibition Location and Artwork!

Quimby’s is proud to co-sponsor Chicago Zine Fest! As per their most recent press release:

 

CHICAGO- Chicago Zine Fest is thrilled to announce that the dates for our 6th annual festival will be Friday May 8th and Saturday May 9th!

The exhibition will be Saturday May 9th from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. at Plumbers Union Hall on the near West Side. This is a new location for the fest’s exhibition. This venue will allow us to add more participants, organization and programming to the expo. Friday May 8th will host our opening panel, as well as a youth reading, and exhibitor reading (information, location and times TBA).

Registration for the exhibition will be open on Sunday, February 22nd at 12PM CST. The festival welcomes self-publishers who release independent zines and comics. Registration occurs through our website.

The artwork for the 2015 festival was designed by Chicago based cartoonist, illustrator, and teaching artist Corinne Mucha (maidenhousefly.com). Final artwork to be released.

Look for future press releases closer to the festival date to include programming information, festival workshop schedule, invited guest panelists and announced festival exhibitors.

Zine & Comics Events: Making Magic Happen Librarians & Zinesters, at Quimby’s 1/30

Join librarians and zine enthusiasts at Quimby’s Bookstore to discuss running a successful zine or comics event – whether it’s a one-hour DIY workshop for teens or a festival with thousands of attendees. Librarians, zinesters, and comics makers will share stories and tips about developing community through events, and then open the floor to your questions. This workshop to learn about promoting comics and zines from successful planners from the Chicago Zine Fest, Chicago Public Library and more.

Featured speakers include: Johnny from Chicago Zine Fest, Julie Koslowsky (Outreach Coordinator for YOUmedia at the Chicago Public Library and CZF) & Joshua for Mid-Michigan Zine Fest.

Coordinated with the 2015 American Library Association Midwinter Conference, this is your chance to meet and talk about zines with some of the 12,000 librarians who will be in Chicago. After the event (and time for browsing), head around the corner to Dimo’s for vegan-friendly pizza (1615 North Damen Avenue).

This event is free and open to the public – anyone interested in zines or libraries is encouraged to attend!
