Patton Oswalt! Not at Quimby’s, But at Reckless Records 3/18

Comedian Patton Oswalt will be signing his book Zombie Spaceship Wasteland at the Reckless Records in Wicker Park! And we’ll be there at Reckless too, selling it, as well as an unabridged audio CD version of the book. Of course Reckless will be selling other Patton Oswalt CDs to complete your collection.

Reckless Records is at 1532 N Milwaukee Ave, just a 5 minute walk from Quimby’s.

Prepare yourself for a journey through the world of Patton Oswalt, one of the most creative, insightful, and hysterical voices on the entertain­ment scene today. Widely known for his roles in the films Big Fan and Ratatouille, as well as the television hit The King of Queens, Patton Oswalt—a staple of Comedy Central—has been amusing audiences for decades. Now, with Zombie Spaceship Wasteland, he offers a fascinating look into his most unusual, and lovable, mindscape.

Oswalt combines memoir with uproarious humor, from snow forts to Dungeons & Dragons to gifts from Grandma that had to be explained. He remem­bers his teen summers spent working in a movie Cineplex and his early years doing stand-up. Readers are also treated to several graphic elements, includ­ing a vampire tale for the rest of us and some greeting cards with a special touch. Then there’s the book’s centerpiece, which posits that before all young creative minds have anything to write about, they will home in on one of three story lines: zom­bies, spaceships, or wastelands.

Oswalt chose wastelands, and ever since he has been mining our society’s wasteland for perversion and excess, pop culture and fatty foods, indie rock and single-malt scotch. Zombie Spaceship Wasteland is an inventive account of the evolution of Patton Oswalt’s wildly insightful worldview, sure to indulge his legion of fans and lure many new admirers to his very entertaining “wasteland.”

Quimby’s is proud to co-sponsor Chicago Zine Fest 2011, Friday, March 25th and Saturday, March 26th, at various locations around town. As part of the opening night’s festivities at 9pm on March 25th, Quimby’s offers some karaoke for giggles!

James Kirkpatrick/Thesis Sahib Launch for Before The End 2/19

Before the End showcases over fifty full-colour pages of James Kirkpatrick’s paintings, drawings, and sculptures, and includes a download card for his new 16 – song album as Thesis Sahib. When you’re done with the card, you can plant it to grow wildflowers!

It also comes with a blue vinyl 7-inch record featuring two previously unreleased tracks, noises from four of his sound sculptures, and two songs from the full length album.

James Kirkpatrick has shown his art and toured with his music internationally and was featured in the traveling group exhibition Pulp Fiction, presented at Museum London, The Museum of Contemporary Canadian Art, and at St. Mary’s University Art Gallery. He is also well known as the graffiti artist and rapper Thesis Sahib. He has created artwork for several album covers in the underground hip hop genre, and his collaborative art book with Peter Thompson, Brain Trust, is published by Anteism. He works collaboratively with Jamie Q as the art team Dusty Peas and with Peter Thompson as the art and music duo Brain Trust.  His paintings incorporate sculptural, kinetic, and auditory elements, as he combines his 2D aesthetic with circuit-bent electronic toys. Likewise, compositions written on modified Gameboys and circuit-bent sounds have become part of his music and on-stage performances.

Mildred Pierce Magazine Issue #4 Release Party 2/26

Join us as we celebrate Mildred Pierce‘s fourth issue, the theme of which is “Comedy and the Grotesque.” A number of Chicago artists and writers are featured in this bad boy, with a cover designed and screenprinted by Edie Fake.

The evening’s program will feature readings and performances by MP contributors James Tadd Adcox (Artifice Magazine), Edie Fake (Gaylord Phoenix), Jim Joyce (Or Let It Sink), Vicky Lim (Dear Jaguar), Ed Choy Moorman (editor/publisher, Ghost Comics), and writer/artist Ellen Nielsen.

Mildred Pierce is a (maga)zine, co-founded in 2005 by John Bylander and Megan Milks and co-edited by the same. It is a somewhat annual zine dealing in art, writing and countercultural cultural criticism.

Refreshments will be provided. A limited edition zine will be sold.
