The first Saturday in May is always Free Comic Book Day (yes, we’ll have some free comics all day), and this year Quimby’s also celebrates by welcoming Jesse Duquette of “The Daily Don” — the popular Instagram which is now featured in a book.

“The Daily Don: All The News That Fits Into Tiny, Tiny Hands” (Skyhorse Publishing) collects the best of the first two years of artist Jesse Duquette’s Instagram art project “The Daily Don”, a gallery of cartoons centered around the Trump administration. As soon as the lies began on Day One of Trump’s presidency about crowd sizes at his Inauguration, Duquette decided the best weapon he could employ against the coming madness was his pack of colored pencils. Thus began his semi-monastic regimen of documenting each and every day of this administration’s actions, tweets, scandals, and bizarro cast of characters through satirical cartoons, a healthier outlet for an incredulous and outraged public than, say, depressed drinking or Proud Boy provoking. Duquette’s influences range from Shel Silverstein to Pat Oliphant to Moebius, but the effect is mostly slow motion pen-and-ink waterboarding.

Anyone who doesn’t follow The Daily Don is missing the point of life in 2018 .” – Laurence Tribe, Author & Professor at Harvard Law School, real smart guy.

Jesse’s work has been featured in such places as: The Globe & Mail, TruthDig, MoveOn.org, and Viceland’s “The Hunt for the Trump Tapes with Tom Arnold”. He has also been featured on the “CraftSanity” podcast and was the subject of a Snopes article (verified “True”!). Jesse has no degrees or awards to his name but his mother loves him anyways.

Note: Free Comic Book Day goes on all day and we’ll have some, but only as long as supplies last. The Daily Don is not a free comic.

Trubble Club started as a group of Chicago-based cartoonist making jam comics. While we still do that, and love doing that, we’ve been branching out. The Infinite Corpse is a never-ending webcomic spearheaded by Trubble Club, that includes panels by both totally unknown artists, and institutions, like Art Speigelman and Kim Deitch. We have also recently done commissioned installations for the Museum of Contemporary Art, The DePaul Art Museum, and the John Michael Kohler Art Center.

The Chicago Alternative Comics Expo [CAKE] is a weekend-long celebration of independent comics, inspired by Chicago’s rich legacy as home to many of underground and alternative comics’ most talented artists– past, present and future. Featuring comics for sale, workshops, exhibitions, panel discussions and more, CAKE is dedicated to fostering community and dialogue amongst independent artists, small presses, publishers and readers. This year’s CAKE is May 31 & June 1st at the Center on Halsted (3656 N Halsted), and is free and open to the public.

3:00 pm

Darth Vader and Son by Jeffrey Brown explores, What if Darth Vader actively raised his son? What if “I am your father” was just a stern admonishment from an annoyed dad? In this hilarious and sweet comic reimagining, Darth Vader is a dad like any other—except with all the baggage of being the Dark Lord of the Sith. Celebrated artist Jeffrey Brown’s delightful illustrations give classic Star Wars moments a fresh twist, showing that the trials and joys of parenting are universal, even in a galaxy far, far away. Life lessons include lightsaber battling practice, using the Force to raid a cookie jar, Take Your Child to Work Day on the Death Star, and the special bonding moments shared between any father and son. Humorous and touching, Darth Vader and Son is the perfect gift for dads of the Star Wars generation.

And guess what? For Free Comic Book Day Jeffrey Brown is debuting a free comic book specifically for folks who come to this event at Quimby’s!

Jeffrey Brown is the author of numerous graphic novels and comics, including Cat Getting Out of a Bag, Cats Are Weird, Clumsy, Unlikely and other titles. Jeffrey also co-wrote and created artwork for the film Save The Date, which was selected for Dramatic Film Competition at the 2012 Sundance Film Festival. A lifelong Star Wars fan, he lives in Chicago with his wife and five-year-old son.
